Lawrence Shankland has been backed to become the Rangers captain once he completes his transfer from Hearts.
It is only a matter of time before Shankland is announced as a Light Blues player after it emerged over the weekend that the club have agreed a deal to acquire his services on a two-year deal with an option to extend it by another.
The move quickly gathered pace after it came to light that there is a break clause in the Scotland international’s deal at Hearts that allows him to leave for free this summer.
Shankland has cut his holiday in Portugal short to jet in to finalise his move, with a medical being the final hurdle in the transfer.
Would Rangers have won the league if they signed Lawrence Shankland instead of Youssef Chermiti?
Lawrence Shankland tipped for Rangers captaincy
Having netted 20 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions in the 2025-26 season, Shankland brings proven goalscoring prowess to the Gers squad.
However, what makes the 30-year-old’s signing even more exciting is the leadership credentials he brings to the table, having almost led Hearts to Premiership glory.
Analysing Shankland’s move to Ibrox, Ryan Stevenson has tipped the centre-forward to be in contention for the captain’s armband at Rangers straightaway.
Danny Rohl is tasked with naming a new captain, with James Tavernier drawing the curtain on his 11-year spell in Glasgow.

According to Stevenson, Shankland will score more goals for Rangers than he has for Hearts, describing the transfer as “tremendous” for the Govan club.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: “From Rangers’ point of view, what a signing. I would be very surprised if he wasn’t in with a shout of being Rangers captain too, with Tavernier leaving.
“I think he would score more goals for Rangers than he does for Hearts. If it goes through, it’s a tremendous signing for Rangers.”

Andrew Cavenagh has made some bold promises!
Gers set for Shankland cash windfall
Rangers may be in line to receive a six-figure cash windfall from their signing of Shankland from Hearts.
If the striker officially becomes a Gers player before 1 June, the Ibrox outfit would pocket at least £200,000 due to his participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the likes of John Souttar, Liam Kelly, Findlay Curtis and Thelo Aasgaard also heading to North America this summer, Rohl’s side are in line to receive at least £1,000,000.
Meanwhile, Andrew Cavenagh and his recruitment team are keen to remain on the front foot in the transfer market, as they look to finish their business early.
Brighton’s Amario Cozier-Duberry is the latest player linked with a move to Ibrox this summer.
