Rangers set for six-figure cash windfall as Fabrizio Romano drops transfer update

Rangers appear to be in line for a six-figure cash windfall after Fabrizio Romano confirmed Lawrence Shankland’s move to Ibrox.

Romano, the world’s most reliable transfer journalist, dropped his trademark “here we go” on the deal on Sunday, confirming paperwork has been signed, and Shankland is set to be officially announced as a Rangers player imminently.

The signing itself represents a masterstroke from Andrew Cavenagh, but the financial picture attached to it carries an important caveat worth understanding.

Would Rangers have won the league if they signed Lawrence Shankland instead of Youssef Chermiti?

Rangers may receive six-figure Lawrence Shankland cash windfall

With Shankland heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, the club holding his registration when the tournament begins stand to receive significant compensation.

Based on analysis by Scottish football data writer Gavin Noon, who runs the Scotland’s Coefficient blog, using the 2022 World Cup rate as a benchmark, the base payment amounts to $273,750 – approximately £200,000 – with a further $11,000 (£8,000) added for every day Scotland remain in the competition beyond 25 June, which is the day after their final group game.

With Rangers set to announce Shankland’s signing, one would expect the Light Blues to pocket that £200,000 fee.

However, there is genuine ambiguity around how the 30-year-old’s Hearts exit is structured, and it has a direct bearing on who receives that money.

It is being reported that Shankland’s contract includes a clause that allows him to leave for free.

If that means the centre-forward departs as a free agent at the end of June, the FIFA compensation for the group stage would go entirely to Hearts rather than Rangers.

The Scottish transfer window adds another complication, as it does not open until 15 June, meaning if Shankland cannot officially become a Gers player until that date, the compensation sum would be split between the two clubs.

What Ibrox club need to happen

The full FIFA windfall only lands in Rangers’ pocket if Shankland’s Hearts contract expires or is terminated before the end of May, something that likely requires clean execution from all parties.

It is a nuance worth watching closely as the paperwork is finalised.

According to Noon, the Ibrox outfit would still only be “custodians of this fee for a short period” even if they receive it in full, as any agreement with Shankland and his agent is likely to see that money passed directly to the player.
