As the Scottish Premiership returns to action, Rangers face a Kilmarnock test which will give fans the chance to see something they’ve been salivating over ever since early January.
And it’s not just a glimpse at the club’s two marquee signings.
In Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, the Rangers squad has taken a step up. On paper at least, they’re a much better proposition than the two loan players they replace. It’s hard to see that not translating on the pitch either.
But it is in finding out how Jermain Defoe and club talisman Alfredo Morelos fit into the same side that has whet fans appetite for a return to action the most.
Rangers will hope to flex firepower in Kilmarnock test
Morelos has been the subject of reported transfer interest from Nice in the run-up to this one. Gerrard is adamant the midfielder won’t be sold this window. The Colombian himself has said he is content at Rangers.
Jermain Defoe is, well, Jermain Defoe. The Premier League’s seventh all time highest goalscorer needs no introduction. Despite being 36, the striker looks after himself and should still have enough to carry his ruthlessness up to Scotland.
Rangers started with a 4-4-2 diamond against Helsinki. This is a system that incorporates Morelos and Defoe whilst also giving Ryan Kent more of a free role. It could well be how Gerrard intends to line up going forward.
Not that we don’t have options. The side now have a range of formations we can shift between offering us a versatility in style and structure which has been absent from Ibrox for too long.
But if Rangers can get the striking duo firing in their Kilmarnock test, it sends a warning to the rest of the league.
