Jack Butland faces an uncertain future at Ibrox as Rangers explore a move to sign Anthony Patterson from Sunderland.

There are doubts around Butland’s future with the Light Blues after he left much to be desired on several occasions last season.

With the Englishman entering the final year of his contract at Rangers, there is a desire to bring in a new goalkeeper ahead of the next season.

Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Pierce Charles has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox, while Sunderland’s Patterson is the latest on the wishlist.

Alan Nixon reveals Anthony Patterson to Rangers truth

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reported on Monday afternoon that Rangers have explored a move for Patterson, who is available for a transfer this summer.

While Sunderland are prepared to offload the 26-year-old this window, they want between £8million and £10m from any sale.

This price tag is reportedly proving prohibitive for Danny Rohl‘s side, although Wrexham, Wolves and Millwall are in the mix.

Now, Alan Nixon has provided further details on the Gers’ interest in Patterson, revealing via his Patreon that Sunderland are starting an auction for his sale.

However, he poured cold water on the goalkeeper moving to Ibrox, insisting that Rangers will not join the bidding war unless Butland leaves this summer.

What this means for Danny Rohl’s side

A large section of the Rangers fanbase has been unsatisfied with Butland’s performance between the sticks, and it appears the decision-makers at the club think so too.

However, strengthening the midfield and wide areas remains a top priority for the Premiership heavyweights, and it is unclear if they can spend big on a new goalkeeper this summer.

That is why Patterson’s £8m price tag is out of Rangers’ budget, while Charles’ reported asking price of at least £5m may also be prohibitive.

Therefore, it will not be a surprise if Rohl begins the 2026-27 season with Butland still his first-choice goalkeeper.

It is worth noting that talks are underway to tie Liam Kelly down to a new deal, but he is unlikely to step up to the number 1 role yet.
