Rangers face a significant financial hurdle in their pursuit of Pierce Charles this summer, with a price tag of at least £5million emerging from Sheffield Wednesday.
The Light Blues are actively seeking reinforcements between the sticks, with Jack Butland’s future at Ibrox remaining uncertain and the search for a long-term solution a clear priority heading into the new season.
One name that has been linked with a move to Ibrox is Charles, but it appears landing the young goalkeeper from Sheffield Wednesday will not come cheap.
The details have emerged from Wednesday’s own end, painting a picture of a club aware of the asset they hold and determined to extract maximum value from any potential sale.
Rangers want to sign Pierce Charles…
What does this mean for Jack Butland? 🤔
Rangers told Pierce Charles price tag
Speaking to The Star, former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Chris Waddle outlined the financial structure he would expect from any deal involving Charles, and the number will give Rangers pause for thought.
The suggestion is that a deal could be structured with a base fee supplemented by a series of performance-related add-ons, potentially pushing the total value to anywhere between £5m and £10m, depending on how the Northern Ireland international’s career develops after leaving Hillsborough.
Manchester City are said to be among the clubs monitoring the 20-year-old, indicating the level of interest Charles has attracted and the kind of bidding environment Wednesday are hoping to create around him.

Speaking to The Star, he said: “I think there’s a lot of good goalkeepers around and available. There aren’t many teams with bad goalkeepers.
“So there is a hell of a lot of goalkeepers available if they [Manchester City] are going to offer silly money.
“I would think it will be one, two or three million in add-ons. If he gets in the first team, there’s another million or whatever. It should add up to about five or £10m.”
Which area should Rangers prioritise on strengthening this summer? 🤔
Andrew Cavenagh has made some bold promises!
What it means for Danny Rohl’s side
For Rangers, who were already deterred by the £8m price tag attached to Anthony Patterson, the financial picture emerging around Charles raises equally difficult questions about what the club can realistically spend on a goalkeeper this summer.
Danny Rohl is reportedly keen to reunite with Charles at Ibrox, having worked with him during his spell at Wednesday.
The shot-stopper played 15 games across all competitions under the German tactician for the South Yorkshire club.
However, a reunion may no longer be on the cards, with the reported price tag and competition likely to price Rangers out of a move for Charles.
