Michael Beale promised but failed to take the handbrake off, Philippe Clement has to find a way of making Rangers more attack minded and more clinical.
One possible option is a change of shape and system away from one that is so reliant on full-backs doing everything.
At Brugge, Philippe Clement wasn’t averse to adapting his formation and we could see something that other Rangers managers have spoken about but not really implemented – a back three in defence.

How Philippe Clement’s new-look Rangers could line up
Giovanni van Bronckhorst used to have John Lundstram dropping in between two centre halves to build possession and, against better teams, he could often be seen making a back three.
The difference with Philippe Clement is that he has the centre-halves and midfielders capable of adapting to a tactical tweak and Rangers fans could see something like this in the not-so-distant future.
Three at the back allows for the full-backs to have more protection, start higher up the pitch and be less wary about the space behind them.

For the central defenders it means that one of them can attack the ball more aggressively without the efar of leaving their partner 1v1, it also means that they can be more involved in building play.
All three are good on the ball and it negates the need for a midfielder to drop in to our own half when there are no strikers pressing.
Domestically, Philippe Clement doesn’t have to play with defence minded midfielders, especially if he goes to this sort of system.
Nicolas Raskin and Jose Cifuentes are both forward thinking but willing to do the donkey work too, if they have to.

The front three picks itself.
Todd Cantwell, now that he is fit, can be given a free role to link play and get into the box where he does his best work and Abdallah Sima should be given license to alternate between either flank in support of Danilo.
Space can also be found for Rabbi Matondo when he is fit without too much disruption, although £7.5m pair Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers will need to improve to gain the manager’s trust.
Philippe Clement needs his Rangers team to start scoring more goals.
Football can be over complicated at times and by picking more goal scorers and more aggressive players in his starting XI it, at least, gives him a chance.
