Ex-Ger drops Clement quality that could end Beale issue

The appointment of Philippe Clement is a departure from the norm for Rangers, not since Paul le Guen has a manager with a proven record abroad been appointed.

Hopefully, the Belgian has more success than his French counterpart and that the experience he has gained in the last ten years proves valuable in Glasgow.

What Philippe Clement also brings, along with experience, is a flexibility in tactics that former Rangers forward Thomas Buffel believes could be the difference, as told to The Rangers Review.

Philippe Clement could make Rangers formation change

Michael Beale talked the talk but couldn’t deliver what he promised.

His replacement can back up his plans with previous examples and former Rangers and Genk player Thomas Buffel revealed what could be the biggest difference.

“When I worked with Genk we played a 4-3-3 because Genk were known for attractive football and that’s what the fans expect.

“At Brugge, he sometimes moved to a 3-4-3 so that they could defend with a back five but domestically he also used a 4-3-3 often.”

That Philippe Clement likes to use a 3-4-3 system is interesting because Rangers have the players to implement this already.

It would give more protection against counter attacks and allow James Tavernier to play higher up the park.

What it would also do is add an extra player in the attacking third.

In Ben Davies and John Souttar, Leon King and Leon Balogun as well, Rangers have centre halves who can carry or pass the ball out of defence to play either side of Connor Goldson.

It doesn’t take a midfielder to drop five yards away from them and hold their hands.

Something needs to change so that our forwards can get on the end of better chances.

Not many managers get a chance to win a trophy as quickly as Philippe Clement and, regardless of shape, Rangers fans will be hoping that he can succeed where Michael Beale failed.
