As Steven Gerrard plays down talk of the Mexer deal in a press conference, did one French football journalist call the speculation right a few days ago?
Rangers are in the hunt for centre backs and the big Mozambican looked to be a quality addition. There were reports saying Rangers had offered a deal [STV]. There was even talk of him making it to Ibrox for the Old Firm this weekend [Daily Record].
But French football journalist Rich Allen suggested a few days ago that there might’ve been other motives about Rangers apparently over-hyped links to a deal for the Rennes defender.
Seems Mexer to Rangers is getting closer. Rennes would like him to sign a contract extension and stay so I half wonder if this is a bargaining tactic from the player and his entourage.

And with Steven Gerrard saying in the aforementioned conference that he has been “led to believe“ that Mexer will be staying in France, it could well be the case here.
Even if Allen did claim a deal for Mexer looked to be “getting closer”, he also suggested there might be something else afoot.
The writer acknowledges that Rennes are determined to keep the player. As a result, he says “I half wonder if this is a bargaining tactic from the player and his entourage.”
Given the intense speculation around the move, it could well have driven Mexer’s wage demands up.
It’s a regular move by agents and players to get better deals at current or different clubs. It’s about drumming up interest.
But it must be said, this is purely speculation and there is no insinuation of this other than the comments of Rich Allen.
