Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos looks set to be thrust into the middle of a £20m transfer tussle this January with Aston Villa and Crystal Palace both heavily linked with the player.
Villa were the first side to be freshly linked to the Colombian [Football Insider], with manager Dean Smith telling reporters to “watch this space” [Scottish Sun] when asked about the interest.
Palace were said to have watched Morelos last week [Scottish Sun] as the striker rescued a point for Rangers against Hearts.
Both clubs are said to be interested in moving for the player, with the price believed to be somewhere in the region of £20m.
It is an astonishing amount of money for Rangers during this rebuilding phase of their development – could we really turn it down?
Whilst there’s an argument that Rangers should demand a little more given Morelos’ form has improved this season, the notion that Rangers can reject that amount of money is ludicrous.
It’s an ominous thought for supporters, who have a deep attachment to Morelos and would largely like him to stay until at least the close season.
But anyone who believes that Rangers can turn down such a money-spinning approach from the Premier League needs a reality check.
If someone comes in offering £20m+ for Alfredo Morelos this January, then he’ll be Premier League player by February.
The question will then move on to whether or not Rangers can effectively replace him and it not affect our title challenge.
