And now the squad lists for both the World XI and Rangers XI have been unveiled, with both raising more than a few eyebrows.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler is a Rangers fan but he will be facing off against his second club in the opposition dugout as he leads a team of footballing icons from the past.

The former England striker will also be playing in the match, with the likes of Emmanuel Petit, Jaap Stam, Nwankwo Kanu, Michael Essien and Robin van Persie topping the bill for the World XI.

The 18-man squad includes a host of former Liverpool heroes, with Robbie Fowler joined by David James, Glen Johnson, Stewart Downing and Steve McManaman for the Weekend of Legends clash v Rangers.

Similarly, Emmanuel Petit will play alongside several ex-Arsenal stars in Jack Wilshere, Nwankwo Kanu and Robin van Persie.

The rest of the squad is made up of a range of names which are likely to trigger footballing nostalgia aplenty, with English journeyman goalie Paul Rachubka joined by Pascal Chimbonda, Robert Huth, Jaap Stam, Michael Dawson, Michael Essien, Georgi Kinkladze, Luis Boa Morte and Robin van Persie.

Robbie Fowler to take charge of World XI v Rangers

Whilst the appointment of Robbie Fowler as manager might come as a surprise to some, the ex-Liverpool striker is a former head coach in Thailand, Australia and India.

The ex-Anfield hero has managed Muangthong United, Brisbane Roar and most recently East Bengal, so the striker does have some experience as a coach.

Fowler will come up against ex-Rangers manager Alex McLeish in the Ibrox dugout, with the treble-winning former Ibrox hero to lead the team of Gers legends.

The likes of Shota Arveladze have also been sending out a call to arms for supporters ahead of the Ibrox clash, which takes place this Sunday (26/03) at 2pm.
