Rangers hand trial to son of Liverpool legend and self-confessed bluenose

Rangers have taken the son of former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler on trial as 16-year-old Jacob plays in a pre-season friendly against Carlisle.

According to Football Scotland, Ibrox chiefs are running the rule over the youngster as several young stars signed this summer turned out in the 4-1 win.

The report claims that Rangers were impressed with what they saw and are seriously considering a deal for Fowler, even if the youngster never managed to get on the scoresheet.

The Ibrox side’s goals came four new Academy signings, as Souleman Mandey, Bailey Rice, Archie Stephens and Cameron Bell netted the goals.

According to the report, new signings Mason Munn, Kieron Willox, Cameron Cooper and Lancelot Pollard also turned out for Cameron Campbell’s side in the match.

Interestingly, it’s not the only Rangers link the club has with legendary Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, with the ex-England striker known to have an affiliation with the Ibrox club.

After playing as part of a special Rangers XI in a testimonial match for former Hearts and Gers star Alan McLaren at the turn of the millennium, Robbie Fowler claimed that he wanted to finish his career at Ibrox.

“I’ve always been a big Rangers fan and I must admit playing for them one day is something I have often thought about,” claimed Fowler as a 25-year-old [Sky Sports].

“You never know, maybe I can go on and finish my footballing career at Ibrox.”

Here’s a video of the striker scoring an emphatic header in the match.

Turning out for Liverpool, Leeds United, Manchester City, Cardiff and Blackburn Rovers during his playing career in the UK, Robbie Fowler never got the chance to turn out for Rangers for real.

But perhaps he will be able to live vicariously through son Jacob in the years to come as Rangers run the rule over the young starlet.

Rangers continue a summer of solid investment into the club’s youth set-up as the Gers snap up a series of top young talents from across the UK.

But it’s the first team most fans will be familiar with and excitement is building after the club announced three new international singings in total this window.
