The truth behind those resurfaced Rangers links to PSG wonderkid

Rangers fans everywhere have been getting excited after links resurfaced online regarding potential interest in PSG wonderkid Xavi Simons.

The Dutch teenager will see his contract expire come the end of the season and amid links to the likes of Barcelona, Rangers were named as frontrunners in the hunt to sign the playmaker back in early December.

With the links originating in ordinarily reputable Spanish outlet AS Diario, it had Rangers fans everywhere thinking the Dutch coaching contingent could convince Xavi Simons to sign.

But after the player turned out for the PSG first team – and Fabrizio Romano claimed talks over an extension at the club were ongoing – those dreams perhaps began to fade.

That’s until the story once again appeared in the Scottish press and was picked up by the likes of the Daily Record and the Glasgow Times.

But whilst plenty will have jumped at this as further evidence of the legitimacy of Rangers’ pursuit – if not the imminent nature of its completion – that excitement has been short-lived.

This is because as far as we’re aware, the resurfaced links to Xavi Simons can be traced back to the first report in AS Diario on 1st December and don’t directly include any new information.

That means fans who woke up this morning thinking the arrival of the Dutch international could be a late Christmas present will be left suitably disappointed.

That’s not to say that the original links don’t still stand or that Rangers aren’t intested in moving for the Dutch youth international.

It’s just the insinuation that there’s been progress on that front or that Rangers have stolen a march is frustratingly premature.
