Sky Sports pundit thinks 21-year-old Scottish player is ideal signing for Rangers

Rangers have been urged to make a move to bring Hellas Verona left back Josh Doig back to Scottish football this month.

Rangers will be looking at a host of left backs and we have seen a number of names linked with moves to Ibrox.

The likes of Gijs Smal, Kai Wagner and Fredrik Oppegard have all been mentioned but no deals appear to be imminent.

Rangers may need to let a left back go before bringing one in and Borna Barisic could move on with his contract expiring this summer.

Ridvan Yilmaz’s future is hardly secure either and reports last week suggested a swap deal involving Hellas Verona’s Josh Doig could be on the cards…

Josh Doig backed for Rangers transfer

Verona want Yilmaz and Rangers may be interested in bringing Doig back to Scotland.

The 21-year-old impressed at Hibernian before heading to Italy in 2022 with Alan Hutton now backing a Rangers move.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Gers defender Hutton suggested that he thinks Doig has ‘all the attributes’ to shine as a left back, getting up and down the pitch.

Hutton noted that he thinks Doig would return to Scotland as a much improved left back from a defensive point of view having learned in Italy.

Hutton thinks that Doig would be a ‘really good’ signing for Rangers and an ideal fit for the way Philippe Clement wants to play at Rangers.

“I thought that he was a player that both teams in Glasgow would have looked at before he left,” said Hutton. “He had all the attributes to be a modern-day full-back – physically strong, can get up and down the pitch, an attacking full-back and that’s how Rangers like to play.”

“He would come back a better player having played in Italy and you’d think defensively, he would be learning week in, week out. I think he would do a really good job.”

“It looks like Barisic will be out of contract at the end of the season. Yilmaz was looking like the guy who was going to take over from him but he has been a little bit in and out. But he has had some really good performances the last few games. It was interesting to watch him against Kilmarnock. He played a little more inside the pitch. He has come on to a game and if he was to go, they have to bring someone in,” he added.

Rangers face battle for Doig

Rangers may well be able to pull off a swap deal involving Yilmaz and Doig, but there is major competition for his signature.

Doig could end up staying in Italy as Torino have been chasing a deal in recent days.

Doig allegedly fancies the move to Turin but there is another lofty suitor as Marseille are understood to be interested.

That leaves Rangers with a real battle to secure Doig, even if Yilmaz is offered in exchange.

Left backs with expiring contracts like Smal and Wagner may be more attainable for Rangers, with Doig seemingly a rather difficult signing this month.
