Rangers remain interested in signing Anthony Patterson from Sunderland this summer despite increasing competition for the goalkeeper’s signature.
The Sunderland shot-stopper has been a player of interest at Ibrox for some time, with Rangers previously said to be deterred by an £8million price tag that proved prohibitive.
Now, fresh developments elsewhere have added urgency to the situation, with both Wrexham and Millwall plotting moves that could shape Patterson’s next destination before the Gers have the chance to act decisively.

Wrexham plot Patterson loan as picture becomes clearer
According to insider journalist Alan Nixon’s Patreon, Wrexham are exploring a move for Patterson as a replacement for Arthur Okonkwo, whose place at the Welsh club is now under genuine threat.
Crucially, Wrexham are pursuing Patterson on loan from Sunderland instead of chasing a permanent deal in the £8-10m range – a structure that could prove far more achievable than an outright transfer.
That development carries a knock-on effect. Should Okonkwo be displaced at Wrexham, Leicester are ready to move for the Nigeria international, either through a permanent deal or a loan, as they prepare for a potential promotion push out of League One.

Millwall, who had Patterson on loan last season, also want him back for a second spell, adding yet another layer of competition.
Asked whether Rangers remain in contention for the 26-year-old amid the growing competition, Nixon confirmed that the club’s next step depends entirely on Sunderland’s intentions.
He wrote, “Waiting to see what the deal is, and then decide. And that’s down to Sunderland.”

What it means for Rangers
The update suggests Rangers have not abandoned their interest in Patterson, but are effectively in a holding pattern until Sunderland clarify whether a loan or permanent structure is on the table.
With Wrexham moving for a loan option and Millwall keen to persuade him to return, Rangers may need to move quickly once the Black Cats’ intentions become clear, or risk missing out on a goalkeeper who would be an upgrade on Jack Butland.
Fortunately for the Andrew Cavenagh-led club, Patterson is not the only goalkeeper they have tracked.
Rangers are also interested in a move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles.
