It’s a matter of weeks until the January transfer window opens and already Rangers have been linked with a host of potential targets.

From Croatian U21 international Marko Soldo to Dundee’s impactful attacking midfielder Lyall Cameron, there are plenty names being banded around in the press.

But now one potential Rangers target has just suffered a devastating injury blow as the future of Peterborough winger Kwame Poku is thrown up in the air.

Rangers watching Kwame Poku

Rangers News exclusively revealed earlier in the season that Rangers had watched Kwame Poku lash in a hat-trick against Cambridge United in November.

The Peterborough winger, 23, has been the League One outfit’s top performer this season, netting ten goals to aid the club’s promotion push.

The Posh have had a penchant for developing top young talents and selling them on in recent seasons, with the likes of Ivan Toney, Ronnie Edwards and Sammie Szmodics topping the bill.

Outspoken chairman Darragh MacAnthony was also clear that Peterborough expect to recoup around £6m on Poku regardless of what happens come the end of the season.

With Kwame Poku out of contract in June, should any club in England swoop for the attacker that’s the figure MacAnthony expects the tribunal to settle on.

But such costs would not impact Rangers, who can take advantage of cross border rules to sign Poku for a nominal fee, much in the same way the club did with Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Zak Lovelace.

That said, Rangers aren’t the only team that’s been linked, with the likes of Southampton and Ipswich Town mentioned in the Premier League.

Peterborough winger out for three months

Whilst Kwame Poku is certainly an interesting profile for Rangers fans, any suggestion the club could sign a pre-contract with the winger and negotiate a January transfer has just hit the wall.

That’s because Peterborough have confirmed that Poku is facing three months on the sidelines following surgery on a hamstring injury sustained last week.

Poku was forced off only 23 minutes into the shock 1-0 defeat at home to Burton Albion and manager Darren Ferguson confirmed the news to BBC Sport.

“He’s been the best player in the league in many people’s opinion and we have to get on with it. He’ll be back around March time,” said Ferguson.

“He had a scan and needed an operation. It gives someone else an opportunity, that’s how I’m looking at it – I never get too down on injuries because I know it’s part of the game, I don’t make excuses with it, I never have done.

“But it is a blow for the boy because he’s in such good form.”
