Rangers star to follow Rabbi Matondo out door as space freed up for ‘decisive’ target

Rangers were expected to have ins and outs in the January transfer window but not a lot has happened to date.

As usual, the rumour mill is overdrive about players Gers may or may not be targeting and current squad members who could leave.

Defenders are most pressingly needed amid injuries even after James Tavernier and Leon Balogun returned, with Robin Propper going off injured last night alongside another Rangers teammate.

It won’t be the only position Philippe Clement is looking at as he aims to strengthen a team which is 13 points behind Celtic.

Fans would like another striker to compete with Hamza Igamane and Danilo with Cyriel Dessers’ future uncertain.

Dessers is now wanted in La Liga by Leganes after previous links to Cagliari in Italy and Saint-Ettienne in France.

Rangers may need to move fringe men out to free up funds and squad places and there would be some contenders.

Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo can leave Rangers

We told yesterday how Rangers were looking to bring in seven figures for Rabbi Matondo with interest from the English Championship – Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday- and Serie A – Torino and Lecce.

It is looking increasingly likely the Welsh winger will leave this month after becoming surplus to requirements.

And he could be followed out the door by Kieran Dowell.

The midfielder has been used sparingly off the bench by Clement this season and doesn’t seem to feature in the plans almost two years after being signed on a free by Michael Beale.

And the Rangers Review is now reporting both Matondo and Dowell have been told they can leave the club.

It is stated a return to England is the most likely outcome for the midfielder but no clubs are mentioned.

Dowell’s exit could free up a space in the squad for Lyall Cameron as Rangers are continually linked to the Dundee star.

Philippe Clement was asked about Cameron recently and described him as ‘decisive’.

Leon King heading for Rangers exit

Leon King is another who will be heading out of Ibrox in this window, but only on loan.

Gers have decided to loan out the young defender who has been kicking his heels all season and six English Championship clubs are showing an interest.

Those are Swansea City, Luton Town, Preston North End, Hull City and Plymouth Argyle.

King has barely had a look in despite the injury problems in defence and a loan can get him games under the belt.
