Rangers are working on closing deals for two more players after signing Lawrence Shankland, with Dan Neil firmly in the picture.

Insider journalist Alan Nixon, who was among the first to report on Danny Rohl’s appointment in Govan last October, has given a tantalising update on the Gers’ transfer activity, suggesting the club are close to wrapping up a couple of deals.

The news will come as a significant boost to supporters eager to see Andrew Cavenagh back up the Shankland signing with further arrivals at Ibrox.

Nixon’s update also sheds light on the direction of Rangers‘ recruitment strategy this summer, one that appears to align closely with Cavenagh’s stated preference for Scottish and domestically proven talent.

Neil in pole position as Rangers close in double signing

According to Nixon via his Patreon, Rangers are waiting to close a couple of deals, and the former Sunderland midfielder is well placed to be one of them, with the insider describing Neil as having “a good chance” of making the move to Ibrox.

The 24-year-old is out of contract this summer following an impressive loan spell at Ipswich Town, where he made 17 appearances as Kieran McKenna’s side clinched the Championship runners-up spot and secured promotion to the Premier League.

A permanent move to Portman Road is not expected to materialise, leaving the door wide open for Rangers to push through a deal for a player they first attempted to sign in January, only to miss out when Neil opted for the Ipswich loan instead.

The Premiership heavyweights have rekindled their interest in the midfielder and are seemingly on the verge of striking a deal.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen who the other player Nixon referenced is, with the possibility of a mystery target now coming to light.

The journalist also pointed out that Rangers are focusing on the Scottish and domestic market.

Cavenagh sticking to transfer strategy

Nixon’s reference to Rangers focusing on the Scottish and domestic market is telling.

Neil, Cammy Devlin and Elliot Watt have all been linked with moves to Ibrox, and that list reflects exactly the kind of recruitment philosophy Cavenagh outlined recently.

With Shankland already through the door and a double signing now seemingly imminent, Rangers are beginning to build real momentum in what promises to be a transformative summer at Ibrox.
