Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign Dan Neil from Sunderland on a free transfer.
The Ibrox club attempted to sign the departing Sunderland midfielder during the winter transfer window, only to see him opt for a loan move to Ipswich Town instead.
That spell at Portman Road has now come to an end, and with Neil out of contract this summer, Rangers are ready to pounce.

Rangers close in on Dan Neil
According to the Scottish Sun, the Gers are closing on a deal for the 24-year-old, who impressed on loan at Ipswich during the second half of the season, as Kieran McKenna’s side clinched the Championship runners-up spot and secured promotion to the Premier League.
The newspaper, who were the first to break the news regarding Lawrence Shankland’s signing, reported that the Govan club are keen to snap him up, with Danny Rohl making serious moves in the market.
Neil made 17 appearances for Ipswich across all competitions during his loan spell, helping them seal their top-flight return.

However, a permanent move to Portman Road to feature in Premier League football is not expected to materialise, leaving the door wide open for Rangers to revisit their interest.
Coventry City, freshly crowned Championship winners and preparing for life in the top flight themselves, are also understood to be monitoring Neil’s situation.
The suggestions, though, are that Rangers are clearly in the front seat to sign the midfielder.

What Neil would bring to Ibrox
The South Shields-born midfielder fits the profile Rangers have been targeting in midfield – technically assured, with the experience of performing at a high level in the English second tier and the versatility to operate in multiple roles across the middle of the park.
With questions lingering over Nicolas Raskin’s future and Rohl keen to reshape his midfield options ahead of a crucial season, Neil’s arrival would represent a great piece of business.
Having already moved quickly to land Shankland, the Glasgwegian outfit appear determined to maintain their momentum in the transfer market, and the Sunderland ace looks set to be the next through the door at Ibrox.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what Neil’s signing would mean for Rangers’ interest in Elliot Watt and Cammy Devlin.
