Rangers reality check as West Ham consider January move for £60m-rated Irish international

There have been a number of ambitious transfer links to Rangers over the years but murmurs around Brighton’s Evan Ferguson are amongst the boldest yet.

Reports earlier in the season suggested that Rangers are tailing Evan Ferguson alongside a host of Premier League clubs and Old Firm rivals Celtic ahead of the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international, 20, could be allowed to leave this month due to a lack of opportunities at Brighton as they look to maximise his development.

But the notion Rangers would be leading the pack has always been considered ambitious and so it could prove to be the case if the latest Premier League reports are to be believed.

Evan Ferguson wanted by West Ham United

According to the Telegraph, West Ham United are considering a move for Evan Ferguson as an injury crisis somewhat envelops the club’s forward line.

The Hammers will be without Michail Antonio and Jarred Bowen and the report claims the Premier League side are ready to back Julen Lopetegui in the transfer market.

Evan Ferguson is one name being considered by West Ham, with Wolves’ South Korean striker Hwang Hee-chan and Middlesbrough’s Ivorian hitman Latte Lath also on the shortlist.

Brighton are said to be open to letting Ferguson leave the club on loan this January with a preference for a switch to a team of Premier League rivals.

The Republic of Ireland striker is one of the highest-rated young strikers in the English game, with Ferguson reportedly valued at around £60m by Brighton.

Rangers transfer tight-spot

Naturally, with the kind of fees being bandied around and the money involved in any short-term deal, links to Rangers are majorly ambitious.

The Ibrox side remain in the midst of a major squad shake-up designed to cut the wage bill and add value by recruiting a number of young players with high re-sale potential.

With the Rangers player trading model screeching to an unceremonious halt, money is tight at Ibrox and Philippe Clement hinted Patrick Stewart would be addressing fans about the situation this week.

“That’s something that Patrick will address towards you guys,” said Clement when asked about new additions this January.

“He wants to give that explanation what is the plan for January.

“I think every manager feels that (they could use more players), and for sure in the situation we are.

“For the moment with injuries and everything, but there’s also the situation of the club. You need to pay it also, and I’m not the one who can pay that. I don’t have that money.”

Besides, even if Rangers had the money something tells us convincing Evan Ferguson to move to Ibrox would take some doing.
