Rangers Hall of Famer could hold keys to ambitious move for Republic of Ireland star

Rangers Hall of Famer David Weir has been carving out quite the non-playing career for himself in the English Premier League.

It’s no real difference between the legendary former Scotland defender’s time as a player either; whilst Weir started his career with Falkirk and Hearts, an eight-year stint with Everton preceded the five-year spell at Rangers which would make him a legend.

Having returned to Rangers as Mark Warburton’s assistant between 2015 and 2017, David Weir is now the technical director at high-flying Premier League outfit Brighton.

And Rangers could soon be picking up the phone to their former captain amid astonishing transfer links to a £60m-rated Republic of Ireland international.

Evan Ferguson linked to Rangers

That’s because Rangers have been linked with a loan move to sign 20-year-old Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson.

According to the Boot Room and Graeme Bailey, Brighton are looking to send Ferguson on loan this January with Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic heading the queue.

This comes with Evan Ferguson making just one Premier League start this season and several clubs reportedly sniffing around the £60m-rated 20-year-old striker.

Premier League quartet West Ham, Southampton, Leicester and Fulham have been directly mentioned, whilst unnamed clubs in Spain, France, Italy and Germany are also cited.

But there is one condition on David Weir and Brighton sanctioning any transfer deal – the 18-times capped Republic of Ireland striker must be given assurances over playing time.

Rangers face uphill Brighton transfer battle

There is no doubt that Rangers could use a striker of the Premier League ilk of Evan Ferguson this coming January.

The Gers have had a remarkably poor return in terms of goals this season and need additional firepower if they’re to progress into 2025.

Cyriel Dessers remains the subject of intense criticism, whilst the jury remains out on both perennially injured Danilo and new arrival Hamza Igamane.

Evan Ferguson certainly has the profile of a game-changing signing at Rangers but there’s a number of reasons why we can’t see this move ever coming to fruition.

Given the depth of interest, we’ve got major doubts Republic of Ireland striker Ferguson would choose Rangers over the likes of Celtic.

Dubliner Jon Daly – who remains a popular figure amongst Rangers fans – might’ve wore the number nine of Rangers back in 2013.

But the idea an active player for the Irish national team might move to Rangers amid interest from Celtic, rightly or wrongly, seems majorly ambitious.

We reckon not even the great David Weir could convince Ferguson that the striker’s short-term future lies at Ibrox.
