If Rangers ever had any real interest in signing Scott McTominay, it would appear that those hopes are long gone.

It was Craig Moore who suggested that a loan deal should be entertained when the towering Man Utd midfielder was sitting on the bench at Old Trafford.

After starring for Scotland in the spring and again in the recent internationals, it’s little wonder that The Daily Mail have revealed that Rangers are definitely priced out of any potential deal for Scott McTominay.

At a reported £40m, the 6ft 4inch powerhouse is a typical Premier League midfielder playing for one of the top teams in the country.

Despite finding himself more and more on the bench, it is a valuation that is a sign of the times.

Rangers signing players like Scott McTominay is thing of the past

In years gone by, Barry Ferguson was bought for £6m, Kevin Thomson for £2m and Lee McCulloch for £4m.

Recently, John McGinn and Lewis Ferguson have left Scotland for £3m but would now command fees with an extra zero on the end.

For Rangers, signing Scotland players based in England is getting harder and harder, especially those of Scott McTominay’s profile.

The 26-year old won’t be short of offers in the Premier League and his displays in a more advanced position for Scotland, added to his defensive ability, will make him an attractive proposition for mid-table sides looking to push for Europe.

A loan deal when he was younger would have been viable but he seems destined to move on this summer now.

Newcastle United have been mentioned in the past as being interested and it’s no surprise, qualifying for Europe means that they have to be more UEFA aware with their squad and McTominay counts as home grown.

A few years ago there weren’t really any Scotland players that you would consider as being good enough for Rangers, now, we can’t afford the ones that are – with Scott McTominay a prime example.
