Rangers hopes of landing Manchester United’s Scott McTominay have been shot down in flames after a £50million price tag was put on the Scotland international’s head.

McTominay, after scoring four goals in two games for his country during the recent international break, was picked out as someone that Ross Wilson should be targeting by former skipper Craig Moore.

He was, at least, realistic enough to suggest that our finances would only stretch as far as a loan deal though, and little wonder, given a recent £50m valuation by Football Transfers.

There has already been Premier League interest in the 6ft 4inch tall powerhouse in the shape of Newcastle United and it could well be that the Saudi backed side who are the only ones who could afford him with the quoted figure that is required to prise him from Old Trafford.

A more realistic Premier League option other than Scott McTominay is available though.

Could Scott McTominay’s fee point Rangers to Billy Gilmour return?

Signing players from England is becoming an increasingly expensive hobby, Ross Stewart at Sunderland was given a £10m price tag, Joel Piroe at Swansea City £20m; and they are in the Championship.

Players like Calvin Bassey and Charlie McCann are more realistic given that Rangers can offer first-team football but there is always an element of luck with this type of profile, where both are playing now couldn’t explain this any better.

What our sporting director can do though is utilise the loan market to bolster Michael Beale’s squad and rather than taking promising youngsters like we did with Ryan Kent when he first arrived or Sheyi Ojo, signing an established international like Billy Gilmour would be infinitely more popular and affordable.

Gilmour is said to be available next season and Brighton will want him to go to a team that plays attractive football and dominates possession and whilst we aren’t there yet, the signs are that he would fit perfectly into how the Gers gaffer wants us to set up.

Gilmour might not tick the home grown box seeing as he left when he was just 15-years old but, alongside Raskin and Cantwell, he would offer the sort of quality that we will need in the engine room if we want to wrestle back our Scottish Premiership trophy.
