Rangers target Luca Stephenson officially parted ways with Liverpool after months of speculation surrounding his future.

The Reds announced on 2 July that the 22-year-old will leave the club, but they managed to secure a 20% sell-on clause.

Rangers have eyed Stephenson in recent months, as the midfielder is capable of playing as a right-back, giving them the option to sign a utility player.

Bolton Wanderers win race to sign Luca Stephenson

English club Bolton Wanderers confirmed that they had secured the services of Stephenson, who signed a four-year contract at the club.

The Liverpool Echo have reported that Bolton agreed to the Reds having a 20% sell-on clause, as they expect him to sell for more money in the future.

Liverpool received £700,000 for the midfielder, who was in the final year of his contract at Anfield.

He was involved with their senior teams during pre-season over the last two campaigns, but first-team opportunities were going to be hard to come by there.

This is primarily why he was loaned out, playing two seasons at Dundee United, with him now leaving on a permanent basis.

Despite the Gers’ interest, they never ended up making a bid for him, Rangers News understands.

Did Ross McCrorie’s signing lead to Rangers cooling their interest in Stephenson?

Ross McCrorie, much like Stephenson, is somebody who is capable of playing in multiple positions.

However, unlike the Bolton man, he does not count as homegrown and does not have past links to Rangers.

There is a good chance that, when the Gers realised that they could bring McCrorie back to Ibrox, they cooled their interest in Stephenson.

Having two players who are Swiss Army knives but do not immediately strengthen the playing eleven would have been a waste of resources.

Stephenson may be a promising prospect with a higher ceiling than McCrorie, but fans will understand why the club did not decide to pursue that deal.

There are other positions that need to be strengthened in the coming weeks, and the club are working diligently behind the scenes to add to the five signings already made this summer.
