Rangers seemed certain to sign Darius Olaru last summer, Glen Kamara’s aborted exit putting to an end speculation of the Romanian coming to Glasgow.
The 25-year old playmaker would have been a useful addition in the Champions League and during a domestic campaign that often saw us struggle in midfield.
Rangers needs have changed now though and a £4.2m transfer fee for Darius Olaru should no longer be paid for one main reason – Jose Cifuentes.
With Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin already in place, Kieran Dowell signed, Michael Beale is well stocked for players who can create chances and do the dirty work out of possession.
There was a time when Rangers spending £5m for Darius Olaru would be a great deal but not now, we need that money for a striker.
Even if Kamara is sold, we have already replaced him and the money could be better invested elsewhere.
Why Rangers no longer need Darius Olaru
Jose Cifuentes 95% done move to Rangers closes the door on any potential deal given that he is a similar player to the Romanian international in terms of role, even if they are different stylistically.
If anything, Cifuentes will be a better fit.
More dynamic, more powerful, the Ecuadorian international will bring a directness to the Rangers engine room that has been missing for some time.
Michael Beale has to be backed but the money still has to be spent in the right way and in the right positions.
Midfield is sorted.
Two strikers and a goal scoring winger are the priority now and £4.2m at our end of the market buys a very decent level of player for that sort of money.
The Gers gaffer has said he is excited and that he is getting backed this summer and James Bisgrove has said “we’re not holding back”, hopefully, we don’t have to sell before Beale gets his way.
The sort of money mentioned previously for Rangers to sign Olaru would be greatly appreciated in the forward line.
