Rangers priority may be adding goals in the January transfer window, however, signing a midfielder like Steven Alzate could be just as important.

The Brighton star is out of contract at the end of the season of David Weir doesn’t extend his contract, although that the former Gers skipper offered the Colombian international to us says it all about their plans.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement will strengthen over the coming weeks and a report from Steven Alzate’s parental homeland via Canal RCN has revealed who is competing for his signature.

Rangers in two way fight for signature of Steven Alzate

Alzate is currently recovering from ankle ligament damage, however, he is expected to be back soon and otherwise has an injury history no worse than most professionals.

As more of a deep lying playmaker than a destroyer, Alzate is a Steven Davis rather than Ryan Jack in terms of style of play, and has been credited for being his side’s “engine” in the past given how much ground he covers.

Exactly what we should be looking for.

According to Canal RCN, Rangers are one of the 25-year old’s options “possible destinations” along with a return to Brighton and, ironically, Philippe Clement’s old club Bruges.

Currently at Standard Liege, both Clement and Nicolas Raskin will be fully aware of his talents but there has been no official bid yet, in fact, Rangers might not even be looking to strengthen the engine room at this moment in time.

There are a lot of players to pick from in midfield but there is nobody capable of doing what Steven Alzate could do for Rangers and really control possession and the tempo of a game.

We have plenty of energy and enthusiasm but sometimes there can be a lack of quality on the ball, a quality Graham Potter highlighted as his main asset.

Alzate would be a cheap and long-term option, he would also be relatively risk free given his pedigree.

If Clement is thinking about tinkering with his midfield over the next two windows, he won’t get a much better chance to add affordable quality than right now.
