Rangers fans have received mixed news via a transfer update from Steven Gerrard, in which he addressed links to both Billy Gilmour and Juan Alegría [RangersTV].

The Scottish Sun reported that the Gers were eyeing up a loan swoop for former Academy starlet Gilmour from Chelsea, while the Daily Record claim that the club have been tracking FC Honka striker Alegría for a year.

According to Gerrard, there’s no prospect of Gilmour returning to Ibrox next month.

“From what I see from afar, I think Billy Gilmour is pretty settled at Chelsea,” he said [RangersTV]. “He’s obviously had an injury but every time I listen to Frank [Lampard] he’s really happy with the player.”

“He’s a fabulous little player but there’s been no contact between the clubs or the managers…I think that’s just people putting two and two together and looking for stories. There’s nothing in it from our side but, what I will say is, he’s a fabulous little player and we wish him well.”

It seems there is a chance that Alegría could be brought in, though.

The player and his father have both spoken of negotiations with the club and Gerrard admitted that interest is there.

“We’re well aware of the player, the talent,” he added. “We’re always looking to recruit right through the club. This is something the Academy have had a closer eye on than myself, but we’re very much aware of the boy.”

“There is something in that one, but there’s nothing to report on it as of yet.”

Plenty of Gers fans were excited by the links to Alegría, a young Colombian striker currently plying his trade in Finnish football, just as Alfredo Morelos was prior to his move to Ibrox.

Therefore, while some may be disappointed that Gilmour won’t be returning to Glasgow any time soon, the confirmed interest in Alegría, despite potential work permit concerns [Daily Record], will be seen as a positive.

These two players aren’t the only ones Rangers have been linked with recently, with a Polish international also said to be on the club’s radar
