Rangers are in the hunt to secure the services of a Premier League midfielder who has been likened to Paul Gascoigne.

Danny Rohl is looking at a host of midfielders ahead of the transfer window, with Rangers set to miss out on Silas Andersen.

The 21-year-old is expected to move to Sporting in the coming weeks, and a bid has already been made for him.

Valencia join Rangers in race to sign Dan Neil

According to talkSPORT, Valencia are the latest side to show an interest in signing Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.

The 24-year-old is set to leave the Black Cats at the end of the season as his contract at the Stadium of Light will expire.

Rangers are keen on signing Neil on a free transfer, but will have to deal with the number of clubs keen on securing his services.

Along with Valencia, there could also be interest from Ipswich Town, the club he spent the second half of this past season on loan.

Neil helped Ipswich regain promotion to the Premier League, and may be considered by them in the coming weeks.

As things stand, no club has touched base with the midfielder, leaving the door open for the Light Blues to make a move.

Will Neil be a good signing for Rangers?

Back in 2021, Lee Johnson, then Sunderland manager, waxed lyrical about Neil, who came up the ranks at the club.

He likened the midfielder to a “young Paul Gascoigne” based on how good he was technically at that age.

Johnson also liked how good a dribbler the teenager was at the time, which led to the Gazza comparisons.

How long will Danny Rohl be at Rangers?

He said: “He’s technically a very good player, you can see the way he manipulates the ball, and I think he has added another dimension to his game in being able to drop and drive, as we call it, and receive the ball and commit players.

“He’s got that lovely dribbling technique, a little bit like a young Paul Gascoigne almost in the way he sort of hops and drags it at the same time which, as a defender, makes it very difficult to commit because as soon as you do, he’s got the ability to skip by you.”

It’s fair to say that he has not gone on to become one of the best midfielders in England since then, but the talent is still there.

If his skills can be honed, he could become an effective signing for the Ibrox outfit.

Neil is known for his ball retention and would undoubtedly be the best player at Rangers in that metric.

The 24-year-old is also good with his defensive work rate, and would put in a shift under Danny Rohl.

If there is a chance to secure his services on a free transfer, the Gers must explore it.
