Whilst Rangers’ transfer window is yet to kick into life this January across the city Celtic have certainly been making a few headlines.
Our Old Firm rivals have sold Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi to Ligue 1 club Rennes before striking a deal to sign Portuguese winger Jota in return.
But with Rangers working on deals in the background of the club, is there potential for a second coming at Ibrox this January too?
Could Ryan Kent be Rangers’ Jota?
Scouring emerging markets for bargain deals or looking for pre-contracts closer to home, Rangers are taking a new approach to their recruitment.
But there’s one player in former winger Ryan Kent which has some amongst the Rangers support eager to look backwards.
Kent, 28, remains a free agent after being released by Fenerbahce and we don’t have to tell you that the former Rangers winger’s return would make headlines.
Following the winger’s release from Fenerbahce back in October, Philippe Clement admitted being an admirer of Ryan Kent during his time as manager of Club Brugge.
Back then, Clement wouldn’t be drawn on ‘rumours’ surrounding the winger but admitted he’d known Kent ‘a long time’.
With the likes of Rabbi Matondo ‘expected’ to quit Rangers this month, the Gers could be on the hunt for a new left-winger later this week.
Whilst we’re not suggesting Rangers are officially interested, the winger’s return would certainly turn heads a la Jota at Celtic.
Rangers take steps to close Old Firm transfer gap
Whilst Rangers fans will be glad to see the back of Kyogo Furuhashi the arrival of Jota has softened the blow for the Parkhead side.
Celtic have paid a reported £8m to re-sign the Portuguese winger, 25, just 18 months on from selling the attacker to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia for £25m.
Celtic’s functional player trading model is the envy of the Rangers boardroom but the club is taking the right steps to amend what’s been a disastrous few years of squad building.
Rangers will get there – the likes of Hamza Igamane and Jefte certainly an indication of the club moving in the right direction – but for the time being the Gers need to box clever.
Whilst we’re not convinced Ryan Kent is the man to take us forwards, we’re not totally against the idea either.
