Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has provided a transfer update, insisting none of his top players will leave Ibrox this winter, before also leaving the door ajar for arrivals [Herald].
The Gers have made an outstanding start to the 2020/21 season and although they crashed out of the League Cup at St Mirren on Wednesday night, they are well-placed in both the Premiership and the Europa League, with the Scottish Cup still to come.
There’s a lot for the club to fight for over the second half of the season and it seems Gerrard is convinced that keeping all of his key men at Ibrox is vital if their major trophy drought is to be ended.
“None of our big players will be going anywhere in January,” he said [Herald]. “I’m well aware of the club’s situation and what we need to do moving forward. Of course, I totally understand that at some point we will have to trade someone. I’m not naive enough to think that we won’t have to do that.”
“But it’s extremely important that we keep our best players certainly in the next window and that they are here for the duration of the season. I think the board are aware of that and want that as well.
“So we are certainly on the same page. Moving forward, we are at a club where we need to keep active in terms of recruitment and bringing people in. But that also means that, at the right time, the right player might have to move in a different direction. We are well aware of that.”
It’s a big boost for supporters that it has been confirmed Rangers intend on holding onto big assets such as James Tavernier, Borna Barisic, Glen Kamara, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, until at least the summer.
Given how impressive many of those players have been so far this season, there will no doubt be plenty of speculation surrounding their futures next month.
However, it seems that despite the eight-figure loss announce in the recent Annual Report, the club do not yet feel they are in a position where they have to cash in on multiple players to balance the books.
Gerrard previously said that the upcoming window would be more about moving fringe players on than bringing more bodies in, but his interesting comments on active recruitment here will give hope that some signings are in the pipeline.
One apparent option is a swoop for a Premier League midfielder whose contract expires in the summer.
