Rangers announce signing number three in Oscar Cortes, Koppen masterstroke

Oscar Cortes has been announced as Philippe Clement’s newest Rangers recruit as the Lens forward arrives to add much needed depth on the wing.

The 20-year old might be inexperienced, however, he is highly thought of by observers of South American football and the Ligue 1 outfit’s system just doesn’t have space for wingers.

The Gers boss is delighted to seal such an exciting deal – initial loan with an option to buy on a long-term contract – and Oscar Cortes will add a different type of threat for Rangers over the rest of the season.

Oscar Cortes announced as Rangers signing number three

In the summer, we knew Ryan Kent was leaving and didn’t replace him.

Then we sold Fashion Sakala too.

Abdallah Sima has been an outstanding signing but he is more of a wide forward who likes to attack the box rather than being a player who will create chances for others.

What Rangers have secured in Oscar Cortes is a player who will, hopefully, do both.

A player capable of terrorising defences in the same manner that Ryan Kent did at his peak or Rabbi Matondo is now but with the ability to score goals too.

Not only that, but he does his best work on the side that we have struggled to find a consistent option.

Only Joe Aribo and Ianis Hagi can claim to have consistently performed on the right-hand side of the attack but it now looks like the role Cortes will be given a chance to shine in.

Should he perform well over the next few months, you would like to think that the option to buy clause inserted into the deal will be taken up by Nils Koppen.

The new Gers director of football recruitment has brought an entirely different approach to this transfer window.

Not only has there been no leaks until deals were all but sealed but the profile of Oscar Cortes, Jefte and Mohamed Diomande is a far cry from what we have seen in recent years.

Now all they need to do is bring success.
