Rangers have announced the signing of midfielder Mohamed Diomande from Nordsjaelland as Philippe Clement makes his second move of the transfer window.

The Gers boss made a fast start with the arrival of Fabio Silva but has been frustrated in his attempts to strengthen his squad and get more quality through the door at Ibrox.

It looks like Rangers have made a bit of a statement with the signing of Mohamed Diomande with a fee, reported by Sky Sports, said to be in the region of £4.3m – on an initial loan with an obligation to buy, a modern trend in January due to financial fair play regulations.

Rangers back manager with Mohamed Diomande deal

Midfield might be an area that a lot of fans will feel doesn’t need this sort of investment, however, Clement and Nils Koppen can’t pick and choose when the right players become available or what order they are signed in.

It’s abundantly clear that the gaffer recognises that he needs more depth in the attacking third but if the players aren’t available at the right price or other clubs are waiting for other deals to be completed first, then there isn’t much he can do.

At 22-years old and highly rated, Rangers have secured one of the best midfielders in Denmark and a player on an upward trajectory.

Classed as a “real winner” by Nordsjaelland’s director of football, his YouTube compilation makes for impressive viewing.

What DIomande’s arrival does though, is see questions asked about the futures of players like Ryan Jack, Kieran Dowell and Jose Cifuentes.

John Lundstram, Nicolas Raskin and Dujon Sterling are the first choice three and there will be a lot of money sitting in the stands.

Spending £4.3m is an encouraging sign because Philippe Clement has shown that he is the real deal in his short tenure so far and deserves to be backed.

He’s made tangible progress with players who were previously underperforming so, with better players, it can only be hoped that this momentum continues.

A striker and a winger next please Mr Rangers.
