Exciting Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman could move to Rangers this summer, according to current teammate Henk Veerman.

Voetbal International reported in April that Rangers were following Veerman closely and the Scottish Sun later backed up that report, claiming that the Glasgow club were ‘in the hunt’ for the 22-year-old, who they expected to cost upwards of £5m.

The links excited some Bears, although others felt Veerman would ultimately be out of the Gers’ price range and subsequent reports suggested that Heerenveen were looking for as much as £8.5m to part with their biggest asset.

The versatile midfielder is contracted until 2024 so there’s no guarantee that he’ll head for pastures new this summer, but his current skipper Henk Veerman can see him moving to one of five clubs.

“I’ve read things about Atalanta, Rangers, PSV, Ajax and AZ,” he said [Voetbalprimeur]. “I expect him to go to one of those clubs. I also think that Joey will add value for any club in the Netherlands.”

One of the five named clubs can be immediately discounted, as PSV manager Roger Schmidt made it clear earlier this month that his club wouldn’t be able to afford Veerman [Scottish Sun].

£8.5m would also be a major stretch for Rangers, with the club only stumping up more on a single transfer fee on one previous occasion.

If the Gers cash in on other assets this summer, though, some additional funds may be freed up and Veerman is certainly a player with a lot of potential.

Despite only being 22, he already has over 150 senior appearances under his belt, while he scored nine goals and notched eleven assists last season.

Steven Gerrard needs to strengthen in midfield this summer, given that Ryan Jack’s return date following surgery is unclear and Bongani Zungu has returned to parent club Amiens.

In other news, a former Rangers player has been confirmed as the new manager of an SPFL club.
