Premier League Aston Villa are preparing to announce the signing of Rangers youth striker Rory Wilson, according to a leading journalist.
The links between the 16-year-old Scotland youth international and the now Steven Gerrard managed club have been prominent for the last few weeks but Barry Anderson has now made some claims regarding the details of the deal.
Taking to Twitter, the Scotsman journalist claims that Rangers will recoup around £300k in development fees after training Rory Wilson prior to him being able to sign professional terms.
Anderson also claims that as well as tying up a deal for Rangers’ Rory Wilson, Aston Villa are also closing in on a £250k move for Hearts talent Ewan Simpson, who is only 15.
Scoring a remarkable 49 goals for the Rangers youth sides this season, if reports are to be believed Villa have pipped a whole host of Premier League rivals to Wilson’s signature.
These include the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Man United. Read more HERE.
Aston Villa closing in on Rangers’ Rory Wilson
It’ll come as no surprise that Rangers were also said to be interested in signing Rory Wilson down when he turned professional but once again they have lost out to the riches of the Premier League.
Rangers quite simply cannot compete with the financial packages on offer south of the border – especially for youth players – and given the unpredictable nature of a football it’s hard to blame Wilson for taking any offer.
Beyond money, the lure of the Premier League is sizable given the opportunity to play with some of the world’s best players and the striker is the latest major talent – behind the likes of Billy Gilmour – to opt for a move down south rather than remain at Rangers.
Wilson has already confirmed his exit from Ibrox and as he thanked the club for all their support it’s yet another case of what might’ve been for Rangers fans.
Aston Villa certainly pose an interesting option and it’ll be interesting to see how quickly Rory Wilson can adapt to life south of the border and break through into the club’s top team.
The youngster isn’t the only Rangers player being linked to Aston Villa either, only the other one might go for a much higher fee.
