The transfer speculation has ramped up a notch or two in the last few days with Rangers link to Steven Alzate one to get excited about.

According to reports, the 25-year old has been offered to Philippe Clement who has Nicolas Raskin to lean on if he wants any further scouting advice, having played together at Standard Liege.

Clarity on the rumour has been provided by Sacha Tovolieri, a Belgium-based journalist who broke the Raskin transfer, with Rangers unlikely to be making a bid for Steven Alzate any time soon, however, this would be a mistake.

Rangers need rethink on Steven Alzate decision

The 7-cap Colombia international has exactly the profile that we should be looking for in a midfielder.

Similar to Steven Davis in style, he can do all the dirty work in front of the back four but he also possesses the sort of passing range that the Gers boss needs from his deep-lying playmaker.

Tovolieri has clarified that Rangers haven’t picked up the phone to enquire about Steven Alzate, instead, David Weir has offered him to us trying to do us a favour.

Clement has got pretty much everything right since arriving at Ibrox, he now though, has to go about rebuilding a squad that he inherited with several key components missing.

One of those is a player who can control a game and dictate the tempo.

John Lundstram isn’t this type of player, neither is Ryan Jack.

The closest we have seen since Davis got injured has probably been Kieran Dowell in recent weeks given how composed he is in possession.

The former Norwich City playmaker does his best work further forward though.

Stven Alzate is available on a pre-contract agreement now, although Brighton do have an option to extend his deal.

If the price is right, and it should be given his contract, Rangers should be looking at this type of quality.

Missing out could be Philippe Clement’s first mistake.
