Newcastle United have splashed up to £15m on Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett amid strong links between Steven Gerrard’s side and Rangers star Calvin Bassey.
The Magpies made the move official with Sky Sports claiming that in total the Toon will pay the hefty fee for the 26-year-old, with £3m including a loan fee from last season.
Newcastle United activated a clause in the defender’s contract which had been pre-agreed in January.
The moves means that Villa may look to fill the void left by ex-England U21 international Targett in the position with all eyes on a potential Rangers domino.
Reports last month suggested that the Villains were closing in on a deal for Calvin Bassey, who is currently impressing on Nigeria duty.
But so far these have yet to materialise as Rangers fans nervously await the outcome of any interest in the versatile 22-year-old.
Potential Rangers Calvin Basssey domino as Aston Villa sell Matt Targett
Calvin Bassey was a stand-out performer in the club’s run to the Europa League Final and he continues to go from strength to strength whether in the blue of Rangers or dark green of Nigeria.
Aston Villa are said to be one of a number of clubs tailing Calvin from the Premier League and Bundesliga, with the defender valued around £25m [Daily Mail].
Aston Villa have already kicked off an intense summer of recruitment as ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard looks to build a squad in his image.
Phillipe Coutinho has joined on a permanent deal, whilst the highly-rated Boubacar Kamara, AS Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos all join in a summer of intent.
Gerrard was the man who helped bring Calvin Bassey to Rangers and having worked with the defender before it makes the high-profile Aston Villa links even more interesting.
We’ll just have to see how much of an impact the Newcastle United move for Matt Targett has on any interest, if any.
As things stand Villa have French international Lucas Digne as first-choice left-back, with veteran utility man Ashley Young also able to deputise.
Speaking of Calvin Bassey, the defender’s latest award proves just how much his progress at Rangers is being recognised.
