£25m+ rated Rangers star’s progress solidified with award recognition

The season that Rangers star Calvin Bassey has just had continues to go from strength to strength after he was named the COPA90 Breakthrough Player of the Season.

The 22-year-old Nigerian international has captured the attention of fans and clubs across Europe after an impressive second half of the season on domestic and continental soil.

In particular, Bassey’s performances in the Europa League have had plenty purring with his Man of the Match showing against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final the cherry on top of a fine season.

Amid links to the Premier League – Aston Villa in particular – and the Bundesliga, the talk of a £25m exit has sparked much debate in Scottish football circles.

But this latest COPA award is further evidence of the amazing progress made by Calvin Bassey this season after he joined on a nominal fee from Leicester City in 2020.

Rangers’ Calvin Bassey recognised in COPA90 awards

COPA90 prides itself on the best football content around and seeks to harness the power of the sport to tell the stories behind the beautiful game and make the world a better place.

There would’ve been much deliberation regarding who picked up this prize and it’s telling that it’s Rangers star Calvin Bassey who wins the award.

The Nigerian international has been a revelation and appears to be getting better with every game – Rangers will just be hoping to keep a hold of him a little longer.

Here’s what COPA90 had to say about the left-back-turned-centre-back’s rampant progress:

“Starting the season as a rotation full-back, finishing as first choice centre-back – marshalling the backline during Rangers’ great European run and cup final win.

“The name on everyone’s lips this summer.”

The COPA90 awards celebrated everything from surprise packages Union Berlin, to Ajax’s Bob Marley inspired third kit and the seemingly eternal Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Talking of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, his end of season injury story will have a very familiar ring to Rangers fans.
