Failed Newcastle United links to RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara may have opened the door for Rangers to sign FC Nordsjælland Mohamed Diomande.
Reports have claimed that Diomande, 22, has struck a deal to become Rangers’ second January signing subject to an Ibrox medical.
Currently tuning out for Danish side FC Nordsjælland, the Ivorian midfielder comes with decent pedigree having been picked out from the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana.
But had things gone a little differently in the summer perhaps Rangers would’ve missed the boat with RB Leipzig and Union Berlin both linked to Mohamed Diomande.
RB Leipzig linked to Mohamed Diomande
The links originate in RB Live and with journalist Ullrich Kroemer, who made the Diomande to Leipzig claim back in early July last year.
The German report claims that Mohamed Diomande caught the eye of RB Leipzig after impressing in a 2-0 FC Nordsjælland friendly win over RB Salzburg in the summer.
Interestingly, the journalist then compares Diomande to current RB Leipzig midfielder and Mali international Amadou Haidara.
Haidara never moved out of the Bundesliga club in the summer amid links to Newcastle United, with those failed links perhaps behind the German club’s decision not to move for Diomande.
For Rangers fans looking to find out more about a potential transfer fee, the report claims FC Nordsjælland valued Mohamed Diomande at €2.5m (£2.1m) back then.
With the midfielder now into the final twelve-months of his contract in Denmark, Rangers fans will wonder if that figure has dropped further in January.
Rangers-bound midfielder has Champions League potential
Whilst Mohamed Diomande clearly never moved to either RB Leipzig or Union Berlin, the transfer links to the seemingly Rangers-bound midfielder speak volumes.
That Diomande was signposted as a potential Haidara replacement is a testament to his ability and Rangers will have hoped to unearth their own version of the Malian in the midfielder.
With both of these Bundesliga clubs having finished in the Champions League spots last season, the links also came as they tried to reinforce their squads ahead of the group stage campaign.
Having just spent four years in Denmark, it’s time for Mohamed Diomande to take his next step in the game and the move to Rangers certainly looks an exciting one for everyone involved.
