Rangers have held discussions with an MLS club over offloading a player they have made surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

The Light Blues are braced for a busy summer transfer window, with as many as 10 new players tipped to be signed as part of the squad overhaul under Danny Rohl.

Rangers have already signed Lawrence Shankland from Hearts, while the likes of Dan Neil, Elliot Watt and Casper Widell are also linked with moves to Govan.

This also means there will be several outgoings at the club, as Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande look set to lead several departures this summer.

Toronto FC in talks to buy Jose Cifuentes

Chris Jack reported this week that Jose Cifuentes will be made surplus to requirements at Rangers after he returns from his loan at Toronto FC, thus making him likely to join Raskin and Diomande in leaving the club.

This came after it emerged that the MLS club have decided to send the Ecuador international back to Glasgow after choosing not to take up the £1.5million buy option included in their agreement with the Gers.

However, Toronto head coach Robin Fraser has quashed those claims, revealing that the club have yet to make a final decision regarding the 27-year-old.

Asked if Toronto have made up their minds on Cifuentes, he told TFC Republic: “Not to my knowledge”.

Fraser also disclosed that talks between all three parties are ongoing, with Toronto in no rush to resolve the matter before Cifuentes’ loan deal ends at the end of June.

He said: “There are discussions between us and the parent club, us and the player, and all these things will certainly resolve themselves in enough time.

“We have Cifu till [the end of] June, so [we’re] just going through the necessary steps now to try to move things forward and see where it goes.”

Rangers may have to lower Cifuentes’ price tag

Rangers signed Cifuentes from LAFC for £1.2m during Michael Beale’s reign in 2023, but have already sent him out on loan three times after he struggled to settle into life in Scotland.

Therefore, Andrew Cavenagh and Co. would be glad to offload the Ecuadorian for £1.5m and pocket a small profit on his sale, as they look to fund their summer overhaul.

However, it appears Toronto FC may not be willing to pay the pre-agreed sum, considering they are in active discussions with Rangers.

Cifuentes has been restricted to just 10 MLS appearances this season, with an injury hindering his progress.

The MLS Players Association recently released their 2026 salary guide, revealing that the midfielder is pocketing an annual guaranteed compensation of $1.57m (£1.16m).

Therefore, the Ibrox outfit may have to agree to a compromise and lower their £1.5m valuation.
