Michael Stewart has delivered his verdict after what he has heard about Rangers’ quest to sign James Penrice.
Following Jayden Meghoma’s departure as he returned to Brentford after his season-long loan at Ibrox, the Light Blues are keen on signing a new left-back.
Penrice is a priority target for Rangers, and he could return to Scotland only a year after leaving Hearts for AEK Athens.
Is James Penrice a good signing for Rangers? 🤔
Michael Stewart expects Rangers to prioritise other areas over signing James Penrice
Stewart admits that he has heard the talks about Penrice moving to Ibrox, but admits that it is not something he understands.
As the club signed Tuur Rommens in January, the former Hearts midfielder does not see them going big for another left-back.
He sees both Rommens and Penrice as top-class left-backs, but is of the view that other areas of the pitch need to be strengthened, with the club targeting more leaders.
Should Lawrence Shankland be named the Rangers captain?
Colin Hendry believes he deserves the armband right away…
Stewart told Premier Sports: “I hear the chat about Penrice, but that doesn’t make any sense to me now.
You just bought Tuur Rommens in, who looks the business.
“That’s two top-class left-backs.
“I hear you in terms of competition, but there are other positions that are more important.”

What is the latest on Penrice’s future?
It is clear that Danny Rohl wants to bring in another left-back this summer, as Rommens is the only senior player in that role.
There is credible interest in Penrice, but the Ibrox outfit are yet to make a formal move for the Scottish left-back.
As things stand, it is unclear whether or not the 27-year-old would even fancy a return to the Premiership.
Which area should Rangers prioritise on strengthening this summer? 🤔
Andrew Cavenagh has made some bold promises!
He has just won the league title with AEK Athens and may decide to extend his stay there, where he is a first-team regular.
At Ibrox, he will be a rotation option at best, but is unlikely to replace Rommens as the first-choice left-back.
Given how high his stock is currently, the Light Blues would also not be able to sign him on the cheap, and they may prioritise spending big money on players who would immediately strengthen the playing eleven.
