Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall has responded after being asked about the Jags’ reported interest in Rangers starlet James Maxwell [Glasgow World].
Maxwell impressed out on loan at Queen of the South last season and is currently at Ayr United.
He took a little longer to settle at Somerset Park, but is now impressing and multiple clubs are reportedly eyeing a permanent swoop for him.
The Honest Men have already confirmed that they are keen to extend his stay in Ayrshire, while Hamilton Accies, unnamed English clubs and Thistle have all also been credited with interest.
The Daily Record reported a week ago that talks between the Gers and the Jags were already underway.
Thistle manager plays down Rangers starlet links
However, speaking prior to Thistle’s Championship fixture against Ayr on Wednesday night, which was eventually postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, McCall claimed that he hasn’t held talks with the player.
“I haven’t spoken to James Maxwell once,” he said [Glasgow World].
“I speak to Rangers all the time, but I haven’t spoken to James once.”
No Thistle move for Maxwell?
McCall’s comments certainly suggest that a switch to Firhill isn’t imminent for Maxwell.
However, the Thistle manager tends to keep his cards close to his chest during transfer season.
In fact, in January 2019, he denied interest in Lewis Mayo and Jamie Barjonas only to end up signing both players on loan from Rangers later in the month.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be a major surprise if Thistle still made a move after the window opens.
The ball looks to be firmly in Maxwell’s court, though, with a number of interesting options available to him.
