Rangers player Scott Wright and Gers loanee James Maxwell have been named in the SPFL Team of the Week following their strong weekend performances.

After impressing Gio van Bronckhorst in the previous fixture against Dundee United, Wright made a rare start on Boxing Day against St Mirren.

The 24-year-old winger opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a header from a corner and he was excellent in open play.

He received comfortably the highest WhoScored.com rating of any player on the pitch with 8.6 and now he’s received further recognition with a spot in the SPFL TOTW.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

Wright has had to be patient this season with opportunities relatively few and far between, but almost a year on from his move from Aberdeen, he’s starting to show that he’s capable of making big contributions for the Gers.

Maxwell has been in the news over the past week as a number of clubs including his current loan side Ayr United are interested in signing him on a permanent deal.

Playing in a left midfield role, he helped The Honest Men secure a 2-0 home win over high-flying Raith Rovers in the Championship on Boxing Day and has now been rewarded with a spot in the TOTW.

The 20-year-old assisted the hosts’ second goal and worked hard all afternoon on the flank as Ayr ended a winless run in the league that had stretched back to mid-October.

The next few weeks will be interesting for Maxwell, as given the amount of interest in his signature, it’s possible that he will be recalled to Ibrox before being sold.

Meanwhile, a highly-rated teenager is starring at B team level and pushing for first-team involvement.
