Kilmarnock are reportedly set to swoop for former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty as they bid to avoid relegation from the Premiership [Daily Record].

Killie are currently on a dismal run of form, losing each of their last six league matches and failing to score in all but one of those games.

They are currently tenth in the table and only four points above bottom-placed Hamilton, who have two games in hand.

There were signs of improvement in Tommy Wright’s first match at the helm against Motherwell on Wednesday night, but it seems the new manager feels he’s short of firepower in the final third.

The Daily Record reports that he sees Lafferty as a potential solution to his side’s scoring woes, with the Rugby Park side prepared to offer him a deal until the end of the season.

Earlier in the week, it had been reported that the Northern Ireland international was set to sign for Romanian Liga I side Sepsi [ProSport].

However, it emerged on Thursday morning that the two parties had failed to agree terms and Killie hope to benefit.

Lafferty hasn’t played since his contract with Italian second division side Reggina was terminated by mutual consent last month, but he has plenty of experience in Scottish football, having turned out for both the Gers and Hearts.

The 33-year-old played 164 times for Rangers and scored 42 goals, winning six major trophies during his first spell at the club between 2008 and 2012 before returning in 2018 for an unsuccessful one-season stint.

Should he opt to join Killie, he would be competing with Nicke Kabamba, George Oakley and Danny Whitehall for a place in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Rangers have made a big announcement as the club’s off-field evolution steps up another gear.
