Kieran Dowell to Rangers link and possible big money bonus: view

Rangers boss Michael Beale is looking to add Kieran Dowell to his midfield for next season if reports are to be believed.

The Everton academy graduate finally found a place to call home at Carrow Road but it now looks as though the 25-year old is on the move.

As a more attack-minded midfielder, Kieran Dowell has scored goals pretty much everywhere he has been and, on a free transfer, makes a lot of sense for Rangers.

With a big rebuild on the cards, getting good quality players in without a massive outlay will be a bonus and the England Under-21 international has a good pedigree.

How does Kieran Dowell interest affect Michael Beale’s Rangers squad?

As a more natural number eight, what this means for Rangers is that Michael Beale, perhaps, wasn’t being totally honest when he claimed that next season’s squad will look pretty similar.

Speaking ahead of the dismal defeat to Aberdeen the Gers gaffer said:

“Last week everyone that played – barring maybe Alfredo and Allan – will be a Rangers player next season and it was a strong performance again with five goals.”

Rangers have been linked with four midfielders at the last count, including Dowell, obviously this doesn’t mean that we will sign them all but they have been pretty strong rumours.

According to Beale, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara and John Lundstram will be at the club next season, as will Todd Cantwell, Nicolas Raskin, Ianis Hagi and Malik Tillman.

And that’s before we consider Ryan Jack probably being offered a new deal due to the number of home-grown players we have in the squad or Tom Lawrence returning from injury.

Players will have to be sold to make room for the likes of Kieran Dowell and because Rangers simply need better than those who have continually let us down over the years.

In Lundstram and Kamara, Rangers have two players who were acquired for little more than their respective signing on fees and they will both have potential suitors.

With zero assists, yes zero, between them this season and just 12 in nearly 300 games – 11 being Kamara – they are so far away from being what we need in midfield.

Even defensive midfielders will have a lot of possession in the final third for us domestically.

They are the two players in Michael Beale’s squad who simply don’t fit his system or what he is trying to achieve and they shouldn’t be here next year, regardless of what he says.

Kamara was, only last summer, said to be a £10m target for Nice and Lundstram was linked with a return to England just six-months after arriving.

There will be interest in them and it is time to cash in.

If Beale plays his cards right, he could well end up with a better midfield and with money to spend elsewhere.
