Kieran Dowell has become the latest name to be linked to Rangers as the club eye a second Norwich City raid and potential Todd Cantwell reunion.
Reported £1.5m January Ibrox signing Todd Cantwell had played alongside Kieran Dowell at Carrow Road since 2020 with the Scottish Daily Mail [back page 25/04/23] claiming Rangers are now interested in a potential link-up.
The 25-year-old midfielder is out contract come to the end of the season and is currently – in a massive red flag – out with an ankle ligament problem.
Cast your mind back to 2018, and Rangers were also being linked with a move for then Everton star Kieran Dowell ahead of the January window of 2019, where the club moved for Steven Davis and Glen Kamara instead.
Kieran Dowell injury red flag for Rangers fans
Whilst it’s claimed that Norwich City boss Daniel Farke is keen to sign the player down at Carrow Road, the suggestion is that Kieran Dowell is open to a switch to Ibrox.
A former England U21 international who was tipped for the top whilst at Everton, that suggestion is a testament to the player’s ability and in any ordinary window perhaps he’d be worth a punt.
His five goals in 25 Championship games this season is also not too shabby.
But those ankle ligament problems will be ringing alarm bells in the ears of Rangers supporters who have just had their season derailed by injury after injury in the first team squad.
If it wasn’t those already at the club – a la Filip Helander, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack in particular – it’s those who joined in the summer, with Ridvan Yilmaz, Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo and Antonio Colak all experiencing differing levels of absenteeism this season.
For Rangers to then go into such a high-pressure window with their eyes on a player who is coming off the back of such a serious injury represents the chance for an almighty own goal.
The Daily Mail report claims that Kieran Dowell will return before the season is out, and if Rangers are seriously interested, then it might take proving his fitness in the run in before fans take the move seriously themselves.
