Kieran Dowell’s availability has just opened up for Rangers, as the youngster has been told he can leave Everton on-loan in January.

The midfielder has failed to break into Marco Silva’s squad this season. According to the Liverpool Echo, he’s therefore been told he can leave on a temporary basis.

This follows the manager stating last month that he was open to the prospect of Dowell leaving. He remains highly-rated down at Goodison Park, however, so a permanent transfer is likely out of the question.

Steven Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to secure the player in January. When he outlined his transfer plans earlier in the week, he was happy to touch on Dowell and whether he rated him.

“I definitely admire Kieran and I’ve watched a lot of him.

“He’s an Everton player so I can’t say anything else on him at the moment – but he’s certainly one I admire.”

Big talent

This season, Dowell has made only two appearances for the Goodison Park side. Both of those, however, came in League Cup outings against Southampton and Rotherham respectively.

The most productive spell of his career so far came when he was on-loan at Nottingham Forest. This took place a year ago between August 2017 and January 2018. There, he made 43 appearances at the City Ground and managed 10 goals there too.

The youngster had also been interesting Middlesbrough, but it remains to be seen if that’s still the case come January.

Rangers are also looking at signing up Steven Davis from Southampton. A lack of game-time for the Northern Ireland veteran has him on the club’s radar. It will be interesting to see whether a move for Dowell still comes around should Davis sign up.

Regardless, it’s a nice boost for Gerrard in a race for a player he seriously admires. The only issue is that it could increase interest in him from other English sides.

Rangers will definitely attempt to do the deal no doubt, with the lure of playing for Gerrard surely a big carrot for the youngster.
