Rangers vice-captain Connor Goldson is set to leave Ibrox at the end of the season – but it could be for the English Championship and not the Premier League.

That’s according to the Scottish Sun, who claim the influential Ibrox defender will not renew his deal come to the end of the season.

With Connor’s contract expiring at Rangers, the report also claims that Championship duo West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest are monitoring the 29-year-old’s situation.

If true, these claims would effectively put an end to much speculation surrounding Connor’s future with the player’s contract situation hanging over him all season long.

But links to the Championship duo – and another unnamed side – will also come as a surprise to Rangers supporters who probably expected Premier League interest in the defender.

Connor has been a rock for Rangers ever since joining the club from Brighton under Steven Gerrard in 2018 and Goldson’s immense consistency means it’s £3.5m well spent from the club.

Making over 190 appearances for the club over four seasons, Goldson is a leader in the Ibrox camp and amid rocky form this season has recently came back into his own under van Bronckhorst.

Whilst a January move would come as a major surprise, the situation surrounding Connor’s contract suggests a summer move shouldn’t.

Rangers reportedly hunting replacements as Connor Goldson contract ticks down

Rangers also appear to be targeting replacements for the big defender amid prominent links to two centre-back options in particular.

The Gers have already secured the pre-contract signing of Hearts defender John Souttar – who is the Connor Goldson replacement according to the Sun – and have had a bid rejected to make the move permanent this January.

Rangers are also said to be long-term admirers of Vitesse Arnhem captain and ex-Netherlands youth international Danilho Doekhi, with the Ibrox side in a “strong position” to sign the centre-back as his contract ticks down [Athletic].

This certainly doesn’t seem like behaviour concurrent with signing Goldson down on a new deal and now the Ibrox exit door reportedly beckons for the Englishman.

Speaking of Notts Forest, find out why an official Rangers communication frustrated the former European Cup winners and led to a ferocious online debate.
