Rangers could face Heerenveen competition in the hunt for Atalanta striker Sam Lammers, but not all is at it appears for the Sampdoria loanee.

The Gers were linked with a move for 26-year-old Netherlands striker Sam Lammers, alongside Nigerian-Belgian forward Cyril Dessers, over the weekend.

But there were also reports coming out of the Netherlands suggesting that Lammers’ former side Heerenveen were interested in resigning the 6ft3 frontman.

Dutch report not all as it appears

These originate from Dutch outlet Soccer News, who ran a story title ‘Sam Lammers returns to the Eredivisie’ in a potential blow to Rangers’ transfer hopes.

But alas, as is often the case in the translation of reports from foreign shores, not all is as it appears.

While the headline suggests that Lammers might be heading back to the Netherlands, or that the information comes from a legitimate source, the reality is the story is simply a tip from a Heerenveen super fan.

In fact, the entire report is built around comments made by someone called Hans Anker, who tipped Heerenveen toward Lammers in comments made to Omroep Friesland.

“His contract with Empoli expires in June,” Anker said.

“He is a good striker, can shoot with left and right, can head and creates chances himself. Write it down as a first: Sam Lammers is going to Heerenveen.”

Sam Lammers not Heerenveen-bound as things stand

Sam Lammers might have begun his career with PSV, but it is with Heerenveen that the big striker broke through in a stunning 18/19 campaign which saw him net 16 Eredivisie goals.

The striker was then tipped for the very top when he left PSV Eindhoven for Serie A Atalanta in 2020, but things haven’t quite gone to plan in Italy.

Loan moves to Eintracht Frankfurt, Empoli and Sampdoria have come against the backdrop of an underwhelming five league goal return across his last four club stints.

Now out of contract, and clearly a player with talent, Rangers might be the place to restart his career and perhaps it’s why Michael Beale was in Italy earlier in the year.
