Former Rangers star Liam Burt, who once saw a switch to Celtic spectacularly backfire, has signed for Irish club Shamrock Rovers.

The 23-year-old playmaker has signed on at Shamrock Rovers ahead of the new season, signing from the club’s arch rivals Bohemians in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

It’s not the first time Liam Burt has made a switch between rivals with the former Rangers youth goaded the Ibrox club after signing for boyhood side Celtic in 2019.

But that move was one shrouded in controversy as Liam Burt claimed he was “back home” after signing a two-year deal with Rangers’ Old Firm rivals following his release from Ibrox.

The move would spectacularly backfire with Burt being released only one year into a two year deal and the self-confessed Celtic fan failing to make a single appearance with his boyhood side.

This was after Liam Burt made his breakthrough in football at Rangers, the player making his debut in the Scottish Championship as a 17-year-old and going on to make three appearances for the Ibrox side.

Liam Burt was also released by Celtic in the season of Rangers’ unbeaten title win, meaning his time “back home” was a suitably sore one.

Following his release from Celtic, Burt has had an impressive two seasons with Bohemians and will now try to build on that with League of Ireland champions Shamrock Rovers.

“Liam has really good attributes that can definitely improve us,” said Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley.

“He’s very quick and direct and he’s a different type of attacking player than what we have in the group at the moment.

“I’ve had a number of conversations with Liam, and we know he’s had interest, both here and away. I’m just delighted that he sees the next step in his career with us and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“We tried to get him in the summer, we obviously didn’t, but we’re delighted to get him now. He’s a player that we’ve liked for some time. His qualities and what he brings to the game is something that will make us better as a team and a group as a whole.

“When you look at his history and the moves that he’s had, it takes a strong character and a strong person to make those moves and I don’t see this one being any different. He’s a great age for us and he has great attributes, so I’ve no doubt he’ll deal with the move quite well.”

As Liam Burt moves to Shamrock Rovers, there are conflicting reports surrounding the future of a current Rangers midfielder.
