Raith Rovers have labelled the loan signing of exciting Rangers prospect Ben Williamson a ‘major coup’.

It was confirmed on Saturday afternoon that Williamson had been recalled from an unsuccessful stint at Livingston and sent out on loan to Stark’s Park until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old midfielder had fallen out of favour at the Tony Macaroni Arena after being sent off in a Premiership clash against Dundee United in October.

However, he now has a fresh start of sorts after dropping down to the Championship, the league he starred in during the second half of last season whilst on loan at Arbroath.

Williamson loan a ‘major coup’ for Raith

“I would like to thank Billy Kirkwood and Craig Mulholland of Rangers FC for the part they have played in enabling Ben to join the Rovers until the end of the season,” said Raith manager John McGlynn [Raithrovers.net].

“It’s a major coup for our club to have a current Scotland Under 21 internationalist in our ranks. Ben is a very committed central midfield player who has great energy, he’s really tenacious, a winner and will add real bite to the midfield.”

Rangers talent delighted with switch

In an RaithTV interview shared by the Kircaldy-based club as part of their announcement, Williamson confirmed that he already has two training sessions under his belt with his new teammates, one of which included an 11-a-side match.

Therefore, it’s likely that he’s in contention to make his Raith debut in the Fife derby against Dunfermline tomorrow.

Given that he grew up in the area, it’ll be a big occasion for the young Ger.

He took to Twitter after the official announcement, posting a photo of himself in a Raith shirt and stating that he’s ‘buzzing for the second half of the season’.

Williamson featured for the Rangers first team in pre-season before heading out to Livi and his current Ibrox contract runs until the summer of 2023.

Meanwhile, Celtic could reportedly launch a bargain swoop for a player Rangers ‘approached’ last season.
