Rangers loanee Ben Williamson was shown a straight red card for a ‘nasty challenge’ in the closing stages of the first half as Livingston drew 1-1 with Dundee United.

After a brilliant few months out on loan in the Championship with Arbroath last season, Williamson signed a new deal at Ibrox before making the step up to the Premiership with a temporary switch to Livi.

He’s had a stop-start first few months in West Lothian but made his first league appearance since September off the bench at Ross County on Saturday and was handed a start for the visit of the Terrors on Wednesday evening.

The hosts took the lead in the 36th minute with former Rangers forward Nicky Clark putting through his own net, but things quickly went downhill from there for David Martindale’s side.

United equalised through a well-worked Peter Pawlett goal in the 43rd minute, before in injury time at the end of the first half, Williamson received his marching orders.

The 20-year-old midfielder went over the top of the ball and caught Declan Glass on the shin.

Dundee United’s official Twitter account described it at a ‘nasty challenge’ and referee Colin Steven quickly produced a straight red card.

Martindale was then also given a red card for his protestations.

Livi held on for a point so Williamson’s dismissal didn’t cost his side on the night, but he now faces another period on the sidelines due to suspension.
